CBM has commenced support to combat the shortage of food supplies in various schools affected by the food crisis. Food packages will be provided to students to return home with. CBM is also seeking for a long term solution for future improved disaster preparedness.
Supporting drought-affected regions
Urgently needed supplemental feeding has commenced with CBM support in selected schools for children with special needs in Eastern and Nyanza province. With two weeks to go until the end of the school term, affected boarding schools have run out of food supplies to feed the children. Additionally, a number of the students come from communities affected by drought conditions and there is concern that parents will be unable to collect them once the school term is over.
CBM will therefore provide food packets for students to return home with at the end of the school term. Talking to Sr. Felicity of St. Lucy’s School for the Blind, she is worried because food is scarce in the school and the children who are from affected areas are not able to go home as their parents fear they will not be able to cope in the current prevailing situation. “Some children in this school come from some of the worst hit areas; Dadaab Refugee Camp, Turkana, Samburu, Maralal, Machakos, and Tharaka”.
CBM is responding to the current appeal for assistance while seeking longer term solutions for future improved disaster preparedness and recovery of affected persons with disabilities. “We are working together with our partners addressing immediate needs with a long-term perspective of sustainable development that will help mitigate the effects of drought in the affected areas,” says Anita Smeets, CBM East Africa Regional Director.
